GENERAL HACKSAW USE

Blade Selection

When selecting the proper blade for the job, these important facts must be considered.

  • The size of the workpiece determines which blade should be used.
  • A minimum of three teeth should be engaged in the material at all times, to eliminate snagging, catching and tooth breakage.

TEETH PER INCHMATERIAL SIZE (THICKNESS)
14 TPI5/8″ and over
18 TPI1/4″ to 5/8″
24 TPI1/8″ to 1/4″
32 TPI5/16″ and under
  • Also, soft or gummy materials can be best cut by using a coarser tooth. This choice will prevent chips from jamming and clogging the gullets, reducing the efficiency of the blade.

Installation and Technique

  • 1. Install blade with teeth pointing away from operator.
  • 2. Apply sufficient tension to assure blade rigidity for straight cuts.
  • 3. Pressure should be applied on the forward, or cutting stroke.
  • 4. Long, steady strokes should be used, not exceeding 50 per minute.
  • 5. Saw as close to the vise as possible to eliminate vibration.
  • 6. Do not start cut on a corner, or sharp edge.
